William Hogarth
Witty, satirical, subversive and hugely talented, William Hogarth (1697-1764) remains one of the most multi-faceted and innovative artist from the eighteenth century. His work was strikingly modern and confronted subjects and themes such as the city, sexuality, manners, crime political corruption, charity and patriotism.
His paintings are remarkable and the variety of his output range from elegant conversation pieces to salacious brothel scenes. Among his most famous work are:Gin Lane, Beer Street, A Harlot's Progress (6 plates, 1732) and A Rake's Progess (8 plates,) . Britain's first truly modern artist his works fostered and inspired the gothic atmosphere that was about to emerge.
